The defence production in Pionki dates back to the year 1923 when Ministry of Military Affairs decided to start the State Factory of Gunpowder and Blasting Materials. In 1920s, gunpowder production was launched for the needs of the army along with the production of shotgun powders and blasting materials. Some industrial production was added later on, such as Ferromit (a material used in welding). The subsequent launching of nitrocellulose manufacture enabled the company to produce inter alia celluloid, dynamites, plastics, adhesives and lacquers. In early 1950s, emphasis was put on developing an offer for non-military products. The factory continued its production of hunting and sports ammunition and began to manufacture gramophone records, solvent-based adhesive of the Butapren type and emulsion adhesives called Wikol. The company’s name was changed to Zaklady Tworzyw Sztucznych PRONIT (ZTS PRONIT). In 1970s, the non-military products line was extended step by step to include inter alia synthetic leather and carboxymethylcellulose (an ingredient of wallpaper glues). ZTS PRONIT was declared bankrupt in the year 2000 and a Treasury corporation was established in its place called Zakłady Produkcji Specjalnej Sp. z o.o. which is the continuator of the defence production.
